Jane Proudfit Crabill

Jane Proudfit Crabill, 81, passed away on April 8, 2026. She was born on October 15, 1944 in Lincoln, Nebraska to James and Mary Elizabeth Crabill. She graduated from Lincoln SE High School where she was a member of the honor society. Jane went on to the University of Nebraska where she was a Phi Beta Kappa and graduated in 1966. She received an advanced degree in Information and Library Science from the University of Michigan.
After graduation, Jane took a position as a librarian in the Armed Services and was stationed in Germany for a number of years, where she enjoyed the German culture and travelled throughout Europe. Her next assignment was in Monterey, California where she made many friends and especially enjoyed the wine culture. Jane’s last position was at Fort Bragg military base in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
She moved to West Des Moines, Iowa to be close to family and enjoyed three years in a senior living home.
Jane was a fearless traveler and went on multiple trips solo and with groups. She especially loved France, it’s art, vineyards and fine dining. She also enjoyed a trip to Switzerland in 2025. Jane was an avid reader and loved puzzles of all kinds. She was a “trivia master” and started a wine appreciation club which resulted in her meeting and enjoying many new friends. Jane was a huge fan of the Nebraska Huskers and Michigan Wolverines and especially enjoyed their success in March Madness this Spring.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff in the CCU at Iowa Methodist Medical Center for their compassionate care.
Jane is survived by her sister, Mary Alice Amerman; brother-in-law, Gary Amerman; nephews, Jim Amerman (Patricia Hubbard), Steve Amerman (Leah Glaser), and Dan Amerman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Mary Elizabeth Crabill.
Services are pending but will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in West Des Moines, Iowa sometime in June.
Memorial contributions in Jane’s memory may be directed to the University of Nebraska Foundation or to St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church.
