Jeanette "Sam" Erwin
August 16, 1956 — April 13, 2026
Jeanette “Sam” Erwin (Gloria Sandoval), 69, of West Des Moines, IA, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on August 16, 1956, in Tooele, Utah, to Tanislau “Tony” and Mary Sandoval, Sam graduated from Tooele High School and joined the U.S. Army in April 1976. While in the military, she found the love of her life, Rick Erwin, and in 1978, she left the service to give birth to their son, David. Rick and Sam later married on August 1, 1981 and lived as a military family in Germany and Georgia before settling into civilian life in West Des Moines, IA.
After her military service, she was employed as an executive secretary, staff development coordinator for the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, and youth minister at St. Francis of Assisi before finding her passion as an art therapist. She worked in private practice with UnityPoint, Broadlawns, and Pasadena Village, where she combined her passions for art and helping others. She found joy in art and gardening and loved to travel, especially cherishing the memories she made on youth service trips.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Rick; her son, David; her brothers, Roy Sandoval and Father Clarence Sandoval, serving the Diocese of Salt Lake City; and her sister, Wilma Billman.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Stanley Sandoval of Tooele, UT; and her grandparents, Emilio Mondragon and Eulogia Sandoval of Ranchos de Taos, NM, and Manuel Sandoval and Amalia Sandoval of Costilla, NM.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2026 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in Des Moines, Iowa with visitation one hour prior.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in loving memory of Sam.

I met Sam when I was a newly wed and pregnant young woman. She offered advice and knowledge that has remained with me. Sam, Rick and David became mine and my husband, Woody's family while we were all stationed in Ft. Benning, GA. I will always feel her love and presence. Watching her service, I know there are many people who have had the same positive interactions with Sam. Many people who loved her. Many people who will now miss her physical presence.
My condolences to Rick and David and to all who loved her.

Rick and David,
We remember Sam’s endurance through the Des Moines Marathon and many other walks and events for Parkinson’s. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 speaks to us of her. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. Now the prize awaits me-the Crown of Righteousness which the Lord will award to me.”
Sam, you have done so much for Parkinson’s community and given us opportunity to be your friends. We will miss you and your amazing smile and laugh. We can only imagine the joy you are experiencing today.
Our deepest sympathy to Rick and David.

There are people in your life who make a significant impact on yourself and everyone around them. That is Sam. She was instrumental in starting the APDA in Iowa and I was blessed to work with her. She was compassionate, intelligent and passionate about taking care of the Parkinson population. The world is a better place because of her and she will be missed. Her smile always brightened your day. God's peace, Lynn

Oh, how you will be missed! My life is better because our paths have crossed.
Another limb has fallen from the family tree,
Fly high with angels,
You are free.
Death only takes the body,
God takes the soul,
Our minds hold the memories,
Our hearts keep the love,
Our faith lets us know
we will meet again.

Sam,
How many times did you save me with your advice, your hugs, and your laughter? How many times did you shatter my world with possibilities - big wondrous opportunities? Your love was imprinted on my heart long ago, and your essence is inked across my skin. I carry you in every movement for you celebrated my dance. I carry you in every word for you showed me how I wanted to speak. I carry you in my service to others because you ever so generously served me. Peace be with you, Sam. Visit me often, and especially when I'm getting a bite at "our place". Love you always and forever.

Oh dear Sam, spirited, loving, generous and compassionate Sam. I am watching a technicolor slide show of the many years, activities, music, dance, art, loving listening, fiercely caring presence that was Sam's Life. Sam's m.o.: Touching others deeply with tender care, gentle questions, hearty laughter, always encouragement; showing up in every moment with equanimity, hearing and seeing with a heart broken open to send love and receive love. Dear, dear Sam....I can only see you now in the clouds, in the blossoms bursting open in this colorful springtime....when you chose to pass through the veil. Your spirit and heart live on in all of us. With so much love and care, remembering. Remembering. Remembering. Love. Always. Robin
