Jeffrey Dean Hathaway, 67, of Waukee, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, surrounded by family. A devoted husband, proud father, and entrepreneur with an unforgettable sense of humor, Jeff left behind a legacy of love, laughter, and community.

Born on October 31, 1957, to Dr. Alan and Margaret “Peg” Hathaway, Jeff grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated from Assumption High School in 1975. A lifetime Hawkeye fan, he continued his education at the University of Iowa.

At just 14, Jeff founded the Hawkeye Chapter of the Beer Can Collectors of America (BCCA), an organization that is still active and thriving today. His sense of adventure and entrepreneurial spirit led him to opening and operating Happy Joe's restaurants in Arnold's Park, IA, and later in Spencer, IA. He was also president of Old Okoboji, Inc., overseeing beloved local venues like the Olde Okoboji Saloon, Mocambo Club, and the Roof Garden.

Jeff will be remembered as a man who knew how to bring people together. His warmth and charisma made an impression on everyone he met.

He was married to Brenda (Mein-Le Beau) Hathaway since June 2015, and previously to his late wife, Margaret (Homer) Hathaway, from 1979 until her passing in 2013. Jeff was a proud and loving father to Jill (Shane) Wheeler of Des Moines, Jim (Rebecca) Hathaway of Ankeny, Kevin (Darcy) Hathaway of Ankeny, Angela (Brendan) Moehn of Fort Madison, and stepdaughter Jennie (Nick) Le Beau Roen of Waukee. His children and 22 grandchildren were his greatest joy.

Jeff is also survived by his siblings: Charles (Nancy) Hathaway of Naperville, IL; Theodore (Carol) Hathaway of Bettendorf, IA; M. Anne (Terry) McAtee of Lexington, KY; and Dr. Anthony (Jo) Hathaway of Davenport, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Alan and Margaret “Peg” Hathaway; his brother, Alan Gregg (Kathy) Hathaway; his wife’s mother, Janelle Mein; his sister-in-law, Diane J. (Mein) Smith; his first wife, Margaret; and her parents, Roger and Annette Homer.

A memorial service will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, IA on Monday, May 5, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior. Family will also greet friends following the service.
