John Joseph Scavo
June 21, 1933 — January 08, 2026
John Joseph Scavo, age 92, passed away on January 8, 2026. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 21, 1933, to Nicola and Patricia Scavo.
John married his wife, Angelina (Celsi) Scavo, on April 23, 1960, and they shared 60 wonderful years together. They had three children; Maria (Chris), John, and Frank (Hope); two grandchildren, Giovanna (Jeremy) and Marissa (Kort); and five great-grandchildren, Aaliyah, Paisley, Marleigh, Mila, and Jessie.
John’s parents were born in Italy and came over right at the turn of the century. They established roots with their fourteen children, leaving a legacy of providing farm-fresh produce and family-oriented service to the southside of Des Moines through their markets and stores. John, dedicated to continuing his legacy, continued bringing quality produce to numerous markets across central Iowa. All while running the southside staple, John’s Barbershop, which has been operating for 64 years.
John was dedicated to his loyal customers and serving his community. Through all his hard work, he still prioritized his family and loved having big family dinners with extended family and spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his wife, “Lina”, out on the farm.
John was also a proud member of the Christ the King church for over 60 years and served his country in the Army while stationed in France.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Angelina; his parents, Nicola and Patricia; his siblings, Pauline, Dan, Anthony, Roy, Lucille, Mary Ann, and Pete; and his son, John.
John’s family would like to extended a heartfelt thank-you to his life-long employees, his dedicated caregivers, and especially to his children, Maria and Frank, who have selflessly dedicated the last eight years to caring for their mom and dad – ensuring they were able to live out their days comfortably at home surrounded by loved ones.
Family will be greeting friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Christ the King Catholic Church; 5711 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa. Mass of Christian burial will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. John will be laid to rest with military honors at Glendale Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

John was such a positive part of the southside.
His sense of humor was great.
I heard him say several times to the person whose hair he was cutting, " Too short, too late".
I'm so sorry to hear of his passing.

Maria and Family. Be at peace. Your Dad now rests in the company of our Lord. In the here and now, his absence is filled by tears. But let there be joy found in the love and care you gave to your Dad, because it is evident in the love he first gave to you. It is by the example of God where, "we love because he first loved us". Be comforted where your Dad lived by grace and selflessness. When I met your Dad for the first time, he became a friend for 'all' time. It was a privilege. He genuinely cared.

Maria, we just now heard of your dad's passing, sorry to hear that, you have our deepest sympathy. Alway enjoyed visiting with your dad at the farmer's market. Had to get his hot peppers. Told him his peppers were really hot and he said well, they are hot peppers then he would laugh. Commend you and your brother for caring for him to make his life easier.

We happen to be looking for another obituary and saw John's. Our deepest sympathy and condolences for your loss. Your dad and mom were always like my aunt & uncle instead of cousins due to the age difference. May God embrace John and join him with my cousin/aunt Angelina. Unfortunately, we will not be able to attend. It was always a pleasure seeing him. Maria & Frankie, may God bless you for your sacrifice. Love to all!
