Judith “Judy” Bjork Barrer

Judith “Judy” Bjork Barrer, 93, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to family and friends.

Judy grew up on the east side of Des Moines, and graduated from East High School, where she met the love of her life, Donald Barrer. The two married and shared 66 wonderful years together, building a life centered on love, family and adventure.

As a young woman, Judy pursued her passion as professional show ice skater. After the ice show closed, she worked and retired from Northwestern Bell. Judy and Don made their home in Mitchellville, where they raised their three children.

Judy’s love for ice skating never faded. She volunteered as a Special Olympics skating coach, sharing her talent, patience, and encouragement with countless athletes. She also found great joy tending her beautiful hosta and flower gardens, taking motorcycle trips with friends, snow skiing in Colorado and spending time with family and friends at their cabin in Minnesota.

Above all, Judy was devoted to her family. She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Kevin) Workman; her beloved friend Charlie Johnson; her sister-in-law Curdonna Bjork; her granddaughters; Annalee Workman, Jennifer Wiersch, Jessica McKenzie, and Joelle Barrer; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, along with many nieces and nephews.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Barrer; her sons Dana Barrer and Jerry Barrer; her parents Eldon and Louese Bjork; her sister Mary Greve; and her brother, Robert Bjork.
Judy will be remembered for her grace on the ice, her generous spirit, her love of nature and adventure, and the unwavering love she gave to her family. Judy lived a joyful life and would be the first to tell you, “I have lived a great life!”

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026 from 1pm to 3pm at Hamilton’s Mitchellville Funeral Home, 303 Center Ave. South in Mitchellville. A graveside service will immediately follow at the Mitchellville Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association in loving memory of Judy.
