Karla Kae Davenport
of Grimes, Iowa

Karla Kae Davenport, 69, passed away at home on November 13, 2025. She was born the daughter of Alvin “Gene” and Mary “Ilene” Hendrickson on November 6, 1956

Karla was a skilled nurse for many years. She worked at both Mercy Hospital and Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Karla often volunteered to work the worst shifts in the ICU so she could teach the next generation of nurses. Even after she retired in May 2004, she became the resident neighborhood nurse to her friends and family.

Karla grew up attending St. Joseph Catholic School and Church. One of her favorite things to do was share recipes with her friends and family… Recipes she hadn’t made or planned on making but it was always the thought that counted. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by those whom loved her.

Those left to cherish Karla memory include her loving children, Patricia (Bobby) Jay, Joshua (Emma) Davenport, Aaron (Amber) Davenport, and Adam (Leah) Davenport; grandchildren, Jacob Jay, Kaelynn Jay, Noah Jay, Faith Jay, Daniel Davenport, Emily Davenport, Jane Smith, Oliver Vonstein, Delta Davenport, Erica Stabenow; sister, Valerie (Michael) Judge; brother, Brian (Rita) Hendrickson; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Karla was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Davenport; parents, Alvin and Mary Hendrickson; and sister, Cynthia Lynn Hendrickson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.am on Friday, November 21, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 3300 Easton Blvd., Des Moines, Iowa. Family will greet guests prior to Mass at the church. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
