Kathy Speer (Wilson)

Kathy Speer (Wilson), 68, of Des Moines, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at her home.

She was born December 1, 1957 in Dexter, Iowa to Patricia Downing and George Wilson.

Kathy loved her family deeply. She took care of everyone, attended every event, and loved to make homemade Chicken and Noodles for them. She would often go to Colorado to visit them.

Kathy graduated from Saydel in 1976, and has been involved in her class reunions ever since. Kathy enjoyed decorating for holidays, especially with gnomes. She has loved dancing all of her life.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Dale Gibbons; brothers, Nick Burger and “Bill” William Wilson; and grandmother, Juanita Couch.

She is survived by her husband, “Bob” Robert Speer; son, Chad Schnathorst; step daughter, Stephanie Schermerhorn; brothers, Jim Gibbons and Terry Burger; grandchildren, Brian, Niahna, Ian, Bobby, Sydney, and Seth; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Mary for all of her help for taking care of Kathy, and to Hospice, especially Nicole and Steve, for all of their amazing help.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to support funeral expenses.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Kathy,
On Friday June 5th I have to hand you over so you can be laid to rest. It's sad because I feel like I am letting you go and I'm not ready to because I am lost without you I miss our little rides we'd take and let's face it you're the best sister in law ever.. Miss you like crazy and I pray that you are watching over all of us. By the way I saw the butterfly. I remember our talk about you being there every time I see a butterfly.
