Service Details

Mark David McCaune, 69, of Des Moines, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on June 30, 2025, while enjoying vacation in Branson, Missouri.

Mark was many things to many people – a beloved son, husband, dad, dog-dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, friend, and neighbor. He lived a life full of connection, love, and quiet generosity, always ready with a warm smile, meaningful conversation, or a plate of the best lasagna this side of the Mississippi.

A passionate Iowa Hawkeyes fan, Mark rarely missed an opportunity to watch a game and wore black and gold with pride, except when he was wearing his Dallas Cowboys or Chicago Cubs blue! He found joy in cooking for family and friends, proudly tending his yard, and keeping his Cadillac in pristine condition. He was known for his skilled hands and creative eye, crafting beautiful custom woodworking pieces that will be cherished for generations.

Mark’s greatest pride though was his family. He loved deeply and completely, and his presence will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him, especially his wife of 25 years, Nancy McCaune. In addition to Nancy, Mark leaves behind the following people to cherish wonderful memories: his mother, Evelyn McQuarry; children, Vickie (Gary) Welch, Tonya (Mike) Sears, Meech (Denise) McCaune, and Marquita McCaune; grandchildren, Anna (Tim), Joey (Lexi), Mac, Laine, Kira, Roquim, Mark Jr., and Myriel; great-granddaughter, Coralee; brothers, Earl Jones, Bob (Cass) McCaune, and Rich (Kathy) Rumley; sister-in-law, Marilyn Wallace; brother-in-law, Andy (Susan) TerLouw; his dog, Buddy; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless loving friends.

Mark was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Uitermarkt and his step-father, Ed McQuarry.

A celebration of Mark’s life will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines on Saturday, July 12, 2025. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery after the funeral. Attendees are invited to wear Iowa Hawkeyes colors/attire.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Mark by spending time with your loved ones, cheering on the Hawkeyes, or working on something with your hands – just as he would have. Donations may be made to the family for a future designation.
