Mary A. Kuefner
April 26, 1944 — May 25, 2026
Mary A. Kuefner, 82, passed away Monday, May 25, 2026 in Topeka, Kansas. Services will be held 11 AM Monday, June 1, 2026 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 8301 NW Aurora Ave. in Urbandale, IA with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes, IA.
Mary was born April 26, 1944 to Dennis “Bill” and Mary (George) Diller and was raised by Dennis and Dorothy after Mary died at a young age. The majority of Mary’s career was with the Departments of Agriculture and Veterans Affairs while raising her children. She worked at Middendorf Insurance Associates after retiring from the Federal Government.
Mary was a member Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, a former member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, and a member of LWML. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is greatly missed by her children, Scott (Tracy) Leonard, Rob (Amy) Kuefner, and Barbara Thompson; grandchildren, Nathan Leonard, Toki (fiancé, Nate Ryan) Leonard, Alex Kuefner, Ben Kuefner, Daniel (Hailey) Kuefner, Megan (fiancé, Jeremiah Sistek) Kuefner, Alison (Ken) Conner, Brandon Thompson, and Cassidy Thompson; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Levi, Paloma, Adeline, and one on the way; brothers, Charles “Chuck” Diller and Dennis (Pat) Diller; sisters, Linda (Delbert) Strickland and Sally (John) Seekins; step-siblings, Ella and Pete; and a host of other family and beloved friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Robert Kuefner, Sr. in 2022; father of her son, Richard Leonard; parents, Dennis “Bill” and Mary Diller; step-mom, Dorothy Diller; sisters, Nancy Bloomfield and Donna Hoover; and infant daughter, Debra Leonard.
Memorials may be directed to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Mt. Olive Lutheran Church or Concordia University Nebraska.

I worked with Mary at the VA, we shared a lot of laughs over the years. The one story that I always like to tell is that when she was 50, she didn’t think she was going to be a grandmother. If I remember right, the 9 grandkids were all born before she was 60! She even had great-grandchildren. I know she was proud of everyone of you!
