Patsy A. Bryan
April 03, 1935 — April 13, 2025
Patsy Ann Bryan, 90, passed away while surrounded by family on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Solaris Healthcare in St. Cloud, Florida.
Patsy was born April 3, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa to Ralph and Lillian (O’Neal) Pugh. As a child Patsy lived at 1414 Carpenter in Des Moines and attended Kirkwood, Cassidy, and Nash Elementary Schools. She attended Junior High at Washington Irving and graduated from North High School. While attending North High School she met her future husband, Garey Bryan and were united in marriage on September 9, 1956. From this union three children (Cindy, Garey, and Carol) where born.
Patsy worked at Northwestern Bell from 1952 to 1960. But Patsy loved her family more than anything and decided to stay home and be a full-time mother. However, after the kids were older she went back into the workplace and worked at Lutheran Hospital from 1975 -1990. During that time, she was a secretary, office manager, and then later the Director of the Renal Dialysis Unit.
Patsy was always excited for holidays, birthdays, and vacations and the time she got to spend with her family celebrating each other. Patsy was also known as a wonderful seamstress and made many of the children’s clothes, coats, and later even prom dresses. No-one could ever begin to imagine how many buttons and zippers were put on her grown children’s clothes, plus grandchildren’s clothes too! Patsy also loved to craft. She passed this love of painting, drawing, hot glueing, and creativity to her daughters, nieces, grandchildren, and great grandkids. She had many projects over the years and passed her love of making something beautiful out of something ordinary.
Another huge enjoyment for Patsy was watching or attending sporting events. She loved baseball and both Iowa and Iowa State basketball and football. When Patsy was young one of her favorite memories was to wait on the front steps for her father to come home from work so she could sit on his lap and listen to the radio. It was super special if the Chicago Cubs had a baseball game on to listen to. In later years when Patsy lived in Prairie Vista Village in Altoona she would watch sports with all her friends there too. She also loved playing cards with all her friends throughout the years. Her grandkids would tell you that Grandma Patsy made up a few rules along the way and the kids would jokingly call her the “cheater” of family game night.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Slauson (Mac) of St. Cloud, Florida; son, Garey Bryan II (Sheila) of Ft. Meyers, Florida; daughter, Carol Slight (Don) of St. Cloud, Florida; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Patsy was preceded in death by her husband, Garey Bryan I; her sister, Ilene Kelly; her brother, Earl Pugh; and grandson, Jake Bryan.
There will be a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will follow at Glendale Masonic Cemetery in the Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated to Prairie Vista Village in Altoona for the Activities Department there, as Patsy was a game player until the end and she would love that idea! (2785 1st Avenue S, Altoona, IA 50009)
