Service Details

Philip Scavo, 92, passed away on June 23, 2026, at the VA Community Living Center in Des Moines.

Philip was born on September 7, 1933, in Des Moines to Rocco and Vita (Latori) Scavo. He grew up on Des Moines’ Southside. Philip joined the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Korean War. Upon returning to Des Moines, in addition to helping on the family farm, he worked as a chef at the Kirkwood Hotel and later at the Savory Hotel. Philip continued his career as a chef at Babe’s Restaurant, Amadeo’s and Valley West Inn. He loved to cook everywhere but at home. While working as a chef, Philip gradually took on and expanded the family business, which became Phil Scavo Farms. He continued to grow and sell produce into his 90’s. Up until the last couple of years, he was selling to small local grocery stores, food trucks and restaurants including Coney Island and Papa Kerns. Phil was a great friend to many and loved to entertain them with stories. His greatest pride was his family.

Philip is survived by his sons, Greg Scavo and Christopher (Janice) Scavo; grandchildren, Gregory (Diana) Scavo, Whitney Scavo, Spencer Scavo, Cole (Molly) Scavo and Adam Scavo; great-grandchildren, Nate Scavo and Jamison Scavo; many nieces as well as a host of extended family and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Carolyn Scavo; and his siblings, Danny Scavo, Pauline Brown and Nick Scavo.

The family will greet friends on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Philip will be laid to rest with military honors on Wednesday, July 1, at 10:30 a.m. at Glendale Cemetery.
