Richard Allen Burt

Richard Allen Burt, 93, passed away March 3, 2026 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa.

Richard was born on July 31, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Charles and Elsie (Campbell) Burt. A lifelong resident of the Des Moines area, he graduated from Tech High School. He was employed at Electronic Engineering for two years before being called to serve in the United States Army, where he completed two years of honorable service. After returning, he was employed at Electronic Engineering for 64 years until he retired.

Richard and his first wife Karole had five children, Jill, Heidi, Richard, Jr., Charles, and Thomas (TJ). In 2004, he married Colleen Mills and to this union they added three more children to the family, Dan, Kay Lynn, and Doug. Together they shared 21 years of marriage and both retired from Electronic Engineering.

Richard loved to sing and spend time working in his woodshop. He loved the Lord and was deeply devoted to his faith and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen Burt; his children, Jill (Jeff) Clothier, Heidi (Mark) Hall, Charles (Dee Dee) Burt, and Thomas “TJ” Burt; stepchildren, Dan (Teresa) Adams, Kay Lynn Adams, and Doug (Connie) Adams; 20 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 great- step-grandchildren; and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Robert Burt and James K. Burt; sister, Halla Lorane Dyer; and his son, Richard Burt, Jr who passed February 2023.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Funeral service will follow the next day, Wednesday, March 11 at 10:30 a.m. also at the funeral home. Burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery after the service.
