Richard M. Hejda

Richard Martin Hejda, 78, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Rick was born September 8, 1946 to Leo and Lorraine (Kehoe) Hejda in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from LaSalle High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa. He graduated from Mesa Community College in Arizona with an Associate Degree. He was employed with Rockwell International and Norand as a communications specialist. His job included installing GPS Systems in trucks and trains, including the Barnum and Bailey Circus Train, where he became friends with many of the personnel.
Rick loved to referee football games! He refereed over 37 years, mostly high school and metro youth football leagues. He was highly skilled in making mountain dulcimers and gifting them to many teachers. He was a very giving person volunteering countless hours to various organizations including the Clive Police Department.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Catherine Hejda; his son, Josef (Brittney) Hejda; two grandchildren, Jude Josef and Aria Hejda; brother, Leo Hejda; brothers-in-law, Richard “Dick” Thurm, Daniel Thurm, Don Jon “D.J” (Paisley) Thurm; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, especially Paul Pilatowski and Mike Nelson both of Maricopa, AZ.
A celebration of life visitation will be held from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2025 at the Hickory Room in Lowes Park, 4500 10th Street in Marion, Iowa.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Metro Youth Football League or a charity of your choice in loving memory of Rick.
