Richard Royal Hughes
March 08, 1948 — January 02, 2026
Richard Royal Hughes, a devoted family man and dependable friend to others, passed away on January 2, 2026, at the age of 77 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He was born on March 8, 1948, in Des Moines to Richard and Josephine Hughes. Richard served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Upon his return from Vietnam, he married Elaine Schuster and they started their family together. He worked for a tire manufacturer on the southside of Des Moines for 25 years and later retired from the DOT where he was a maintenance worker for 10 years.
He was a man who found joy in the outdoors, pride in hard work, and purpose in lending a helping hand wherever it was needed. A true jack of all trades, Richard could fix just about anything. Whether it was repairing something around the house, helping a neighbor with a project, or plowing snow so others could safely get where they needed to go, he never hesitated to put his skills to use. His handyman abilities were matched only by his generosity—he was happiest when he was helping someone else or spending time tinkering in his garage which he fondly called his “Man Cave”.
He loved being outdoors and embraced every season. Fishing and hunting were not just hobbies, but treasured ways for him to connect with nature and those around him. He also enjoyed golfing, appreciating both the game and the time spent with friends and family on the course.
Most especially, Richard was a devoted husband. As his wife’s health declined, he cared for her with quiet strength, patience, and unwavering love. He took on this role with the same humility and dedication that defined his life, offering comfort, companionship, and steadfast support every day. His devotion was a powerful reflection of his character and the deep love he held for his family.
Above all else, Richard was dependable, kind, and hardworking. He showed his love through action—by showing up, pitching in, and making life a little easier for the people he cared about. His quiet strength, willingness to help, and steady presence left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his daughters, Chrystal (Donovan) Filkins and Shannon (Craig) Hilleson; grandsons, Blake Goodale, Nathan (Reilly) Goodale, Jackson Hilleson and Evan Hilleson; great-granddaughter, Maggie Goodale; brother, Ed Hughes; and a host of extended family and friends and was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and his loving wife of 55 years, Elaine Hughes. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his big heart, capable hands, and unwavering generosity.
The family will be greeting friends on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home; 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines followed by a graveside service with military honors at 1:30 p.m. at Avon Cemetery.
In honor of Richard, the family encourages acts of kindness, helping a neighbor, or spending time outdoors—just as he would have loved.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Veterans Home, VA Central Iowa Health Care or any Veteran’s organization of the donor’s choice in loving memory of Richard.
