Service Details

Richard “Dewey” Roland passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, at the age of 79, surrounded by the love of his family.

Dewey was born on December 13, 1946, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Dewey and Louise (Sarasio) Roland. A lifelong Southsider, he loved his community and treasured the many friendships he built throughout his life.

He graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1964. Following graduation, Dewey proudly served his country for 20 years in the Air National Guard. He later dedicated 30 years of distinguished service to the community of Des Moines as a Police Officer, rising to the rank of Senior Police Officer and ultimately serving as Lead Instructor at the Des Moines Police Academy, where he shared his knowledge, experience, and commitment to service with future officers. In 2000, Dewey was honored by the Rotary Club of Des Moines as their Police Officer of the Year in recognition of his dedication, professionalism, and lifelong commitment to helping others.

Dewey enjoyed many hobbies and pastimes throughout his life. He had a passion for car shows and loved searching for treasures at garage sales and auctions. He was affectionately known as the “President of the Buy High Sell Low Club,” a title that reflected his humor and love of the hunt. For more than 20 years, Mondays were reserved for lunch with the boys at Bordenaro’s Pizza. Dewey looked forward to those gatherings, where he enjoyed great food, plenty of laughter, and the company of lifelong friends.

Dewey is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy; his son, Todd Roland (Judi); his daughters, McKinzie Johnston (Dustin) and Kristin Exline (Ed Ryan); his brother, Roger Roland (Christy); four grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Crystal Pierce and Deb Jessee (Wayne); his brother-in-law, Kelly Pierce (Marna); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert Roland; and his grandson, Ace Roland Johnston.

The family will greet friends on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Services will be held on Wednesday, August 19th at 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Dewey will be laid to rest with military and police honors at 11:00 a.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

Memorial contributions may be made in Dewey’s memory to the Des Moines Police Burial Association or EveryStep Hospice, whose compassion and support meant so much to Dewey and his family during his final days.
