Richard T. Wessel

Richard Thomas Wessel, age 86, passed away Friday, July 17, 2026, at Bridges of Ankeny while under the care of Suncrest Hospice.

Richard was born September 2, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa to Earl and Margaret Wessel. He was raised in Des Moines and proudly served in the United States Army. Richard enjoyed traveling, fishing, and gardening. He worked as a self-employed commercial painter during his working years.

He is survived by his children, Rick Wessel (Kathy), Russ Wessel, and Carol Kilmer (Tom); grandchildren, Ricky Thomas Wessel (Jamie), Keith Wessel, Tara Wessel, Rusty Wessel, David Wessel, and Katelynn Kilmer; great-grandchildren, Chasity, Karlee, Eleanor, Ethan, Charley, Lana, Noah, Damien, Levi, Alexander, Celine, Noah, and Malcolm; brothers, Marvin Wessel and Rodney Wessel; and many other extended family and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Sondra; son, Randy Wessel; sister, Joyce Wessel; and his brothers, Tommy, Jimmy, and Roger Wessel.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2026, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, followed by burial at Elm Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the family in memory of Richard.
