Robert O. Lumsden
December 31, 1942 — December 20, 2025
Robert O. “Bob” Lumsden, 82, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025. Born in Lansing, Michigan, Bob was the son of Richard and Bertina Lumsden. He spent his childhood in Des Moines, Iowa, where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1961.
Bob continued his education at Simpson College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966, followed by a Master of Science degree from Iowa State University. A proud Golden Circle member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, he served as chapter president and cherished the lifelong friendships he formed there.
He united in marriage with Dorothy Hoefert and together with their two children, they made their home in Carlisle. Bob was a youth sports coach, Sunday school teacher, and Scout leader—always ready with encouragement, humor, and unforgettable stories.
Bob devoted 42 years to education in the Des Moines school district. He began his career as an English teacher at Washington Irving Junior High School before serving as a work experience advisor for the New Horizons program and later as a coordinator for the district’s community and adult education programs. He spent 10 years as vice principal at Hoyt Middle School and completed his career with 15 years of leadership as vice principal at his alma mater, Lincoln High School. He was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional fraternity in education. Through every role, Bob made a lasting impact—supporting students, encouraging colleagues, and building a warm and welcoming school community.
Bob was always busy and enjoyed many activities. He spent many years doing running events including multiple Dam to Dam races and many other running events. He found joy and camaraderie on the tennis court and rarely turned down the opportunity to play. His passions extended beyond sports: he loved cars, riding his motorcycles, and Oldies and Country music.
Bob was known for his generous spirit, steady humor, and genuine care for others. His heart for kids, his fierce loyalty, and his readiness for any adventure defined him.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Bertina. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children, Alison and Ryan (Gretchen); and his grandchildren—Brady, Blake, and Katelyn.
The family will be greeting friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2025, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home; 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. A memorial service will be held following the visitation at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date in Lorimor, Iowa. The service will be livestreamed from the Hamilton's website for those unable to attend in person.
His family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at MorningStar Assisted Living at Jordan Creek, West Des Moines and to the staff at St. Croix Hospice for their compassionate care and enriching his quality of life the last few years.

Dear Dorothy , Alison, Ryan, and Family of Robert Lumsden:
I have known and worked with and played tennis with Bob for over 50 years. We were both administrators for the DMPS and former Vice Principal's of Des Moines Abraham Lincoln High School. Bob was extremely well liked and admired and we will all miss him greatly. One thing I will not miss is his impossible to return spin shots when he was on the other side of the court. All the 50+ members of our tennis group send you our deepest sympathy at this time..
Our thoughts and prayers will be with each of you in the days and months that lie ahead.
Sincerely,
Larry C. Martindale

Very kind man. I remember Vice Principal Lumsden gave me a ride home when I was a student at Hoyt Middle School.

Mr. Lumsden has a special place in south side hearts. As good as they come. Some of my best days were to see him in the hallway and we would chat about anything. He had a special way of connecting with all of us! He will deeply be missed, RIP Mr. Lumsden
