Robert Shoning

Robert “Bob” Shoning, 81, of Des Moines, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Methodist Downtown Hospital.

Bob was born January 29, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Bonnie Holt and Robert Shoning. He married the love of his life, Linda, on June 20, 1964. He went on to join the Army Reserves. Bob was a tool and die maker for several companies throughout his career and retired from Maytag.

Bob loved his wife deeply and was devoted to his family. He enjoyed traveling with Linda, exploring history, and sharing stories with anyone who would listen. Genealogy became a favorite pastime, and he had a special interest in Civil War memorabilia and history books.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Robert J. Shoning; and mother, Bonnie Holt.

He is survived by his sisters, Sue Cox and Vickie Puchalski; children, Rob Shoning, David (Kathy) Shoning, and Ken (Stephanie) Shoning; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

The family will be greeting friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home; 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. The funeral service will be held following the visitation at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Robert will be laid to rest at Norwalk Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society in loving memory of Bob.
