Sharon J Phipps

Sharon Jeannette Phipps, 87, of Des Moines, passed away Friday, January 23, 2026, at Carlisle Care Center.

She was born October 12, 1938 in Mount Ayr, Iowa to Arthur and Mildred Gilbert.

Sharon loved the outdoors. She enjoyed camping and traveling; especially to the Black Hills and Yellowstone. If she wasn’t traveling, you could find her reading or spending time with her family.

Sharon worked for Dahl’s as a courtesy clerk for 29 years. She retired in 2003.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Frank Sly; her second husband, Richard M. Phipps; children, Richie Phipps and Frank Sly; and siblings, Joyce Gilbert, Barb Meislan, Roger Gilbert, and Larry Gilbert.

She is survived by her children, Tammy (Scott) Thomas, and Tim Sly Sr.; siblings, Duane Gilbert, Virginia McCauley, and Stephen Gilbert; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be greeting friends from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home; 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. A funeral service will be held following the visitation at 12:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Sharon will be laid to rest at Avon Cemetery.
