Stephen Le Roy Jessen

Stephen Le Roy Jessen, age 67, passed away Monday, July 27, 2026, at his home in Des Moines.

Stephen was born on September 9, 1958, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Le Roy and Sandra Jessen. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and remained committed to serving others throughout his life. A devoted member of Highland Park Lutheran Church, he coordinated veterans' groups and shared his love of music by serving as the cantor during worship services.

He loved music, especially Jazz, Blues, and Zydeco, and enjoyed attending concerts with his best friend, Gerald. The concerts in Valley Junction on Thursday nights were one of his favorite pastimes.

Stephen met the love of his life, Michelle, through their shared passion for theater and dancing. Together, they built lasting friendships within the theater community. He also loved cooking, especially Italian foods, and enjoyed watching cooking shows for inspiration.

Above all else, Stephen was a devoted family man. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with the people he loved. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his endless supply of dad jokes and puns, and the laughter he brought to family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle; children, Christopher Andreas and Katherine Sun; grandchildren, Logan Jessen and Kieren Sun; sisters, Cynthia Foley (William) and Laura Ozwald (Ted); as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, and his beloved church family.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, Le Roy and Sandra Jessen; and his grandparents, Elvin and Lillie Ann and James and Sante Perry.

There will be a celebration of life at Highland Park Lutheran Church.
