Steven John Hansen
September 20, 1956 — May 23, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce the passing of Steven John Hansen, age 69.
Steve passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, at The Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa. Steve fought cancer for many years, and was admired for his courage, strength, and never-ending humor.
He was a beloved father, brother, uncle, friend, and a very special “Papa.” Steve was born on September 20, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa to his parents, Carl and Donna Hansen. After high school, he enjoyed living in San Diego before returning to Des Moines to work for Forrest & Associate in construction as an equipment operator. He then ventured out to start up his own construction business and later worked for The Hansen Company.
Steve lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and the great outdoors. He was a man who felt most at home riding the trails on his ATV or sitting with friends and family by a campfire with a cold one. For many years, Steve eagerly traded the cold Midwest winters for the endless sunshine of Arizona. He loved packing up his motorhome, heading south, and setting up camp.
His summers were spent at Cutty’s Campground in Grimes, Iowa, where he had some of the best friends anyone could ask for. He always looked forward to having his daughter and grandkids out to Cutty’s to swim, play and enjoy summertime together. Many wonderful memories were made there with family and friends throughout the years.
Above all, Steve cherished his daughter and grandchildren and looked forward to attending sporting events and their many activities. They meant the world to him and he was proud to be their papa.
Steve is survived by his daughter, Shelby Hansen; grandchildren, Emmitt, Easton, and Bryleigh; siblings, Carla Kauzlarich, Craig (Myra) Hansen, Bryan (Charlene) Hansen, and Joy (Dave) Hibbs; many nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brennan Hansen; brother, Gary Hansen; and parents, Carl and Donna Hansen.
Family will greet friends Sunday, May 31, 2026 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa. Services will be held the following day, Monday, June 1, 2026 at 2pm also at the funeral home. Internment to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, One NE 60th Avenue in Des Moines.
