Sue Bishop
July 09, 1940 — January 24, 2026
Sue Ellen Bishop passed away on January 24, 2026 at Sunny View Care Center at the age of 85.
Sue was born July 9, 1940, in Des Moines to Peter and Ellen Palmersheim.
In 1956, she married Philip Bishop. She was a long-time member of Christ the King Catholic Church, and was deeply devoted to her faith.
Sue’s entire life revolved around family and traditions. She was raised in a very close, large family with seven kids. The “kids” still meet for coffee weekly and have monthly zoom calls. Sue and Phil raised and cared for their four kids on the southside, living in the same house for 60 years. Sue enjoyed the neighborhood that gave her children many activities, had a monthly card club for many years, and had a neighbor across the street that Mom visited for coffee (and maybe gossip) literally thousands of times. But her favorite role was that of Grandma Sue, a role she has treasured for 45 years for twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Whether it was the chaos of the annual cookie day (frosting and decorating 300 plus cookies), the all-grandchild sleepovers, or attending birthday parties and their events, she cherished every minute.
Sue also was known for her love (some call it an obsession) of Christmas, with a meticulously decorated tree (“one piece of tinsel at a time”) and way too many presents all wrapped the same under the tree. She was a childcare worker at Carol’s Childcare for many years. Sue and Phil also operated a woodworking craft business, where Sue was able to display her artistic talents.
Sue is survived by her children, Phil (Francie) Bishop, Peggy (Chuck) Croat and Paul (Eva) Bishop; her 12 grandchildren, Nick (Kilian) Bishop, Katelynn (Will Kelly) Bishop, Lisa Croat, Amanda (Craig) White, Brandie (Brett) Newberg, Krystelle (Michael) Cortes-Ryan, Kelle Uhlman, Kyle (Lana) Bishop, Alex Bishop, Jackson Bishop, TJ (Lara) Duff and Kelsey Duff; 16 great-grandchildren, Millie Bishop, Anderson Bishop, Eleanor Bishop-Kelly, Connor White, Lauren White, Colby White, Hailey White, Hunter Newberg, Andrew Newberg, Garrett Newberg, James Cortes, Lydia Mae Ryan, Iselle Uhlman, Illiana Uhlman, Brenna Bishop, and Natalie Duff; siblings, Sally (Tom-deceased) Duer, Sharon (Larry) Sanders, Peter Palmersheim, Jr., Patricia Nutting, Gregory (Kim) Palmersheim and Mary (Terry) Nordstrom, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Philip E. Bishop; son Patrick Bishop; daughter-in-law, Ellen Bishop; and her parents, Peter and Ellen Palmersheim.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a time of sharing at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Rosary at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 6th, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. Sue will be laid to rest at Glendale Cemetery following the funeral mass. All are welcome to attend a luncheon immediately following at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Christ the King Catholic Church in loving memory of Sue.

My condolences to all of Sue's family. She was such a wonderful person! She was more than just an employee at my day care, she was a good friend. Family was certainly important to her. I enjoyed getting to know some of you and hearing about all the rest. My two youngest kids and all the day care kids considered her a grandma. I also loved decorating for Christmas and will cherish some of the Christmas items she gave me over the years. Prayers for all of you during this difficult time. At least we know she is with her beloved Phil.
