Terry Michael Sims, 69, passed away June 2, 2025.
He was born October 16, 1955 in Des Moines, Iowa to his parents, Jack and Alma Sims. Terry was always working or watching sports. He was a fan of the New York Jets, Iowa Hawkeyes, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Terry enjoyed reading the sport scores in the paper each day. He had the best one liner’s and was always telling a joke. Terry was fun loving and a great guy. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him.
Terry is survived by his son, Alex Oponski-Sims; step-daughters, Whitney (Jacob) Pike and Taylor (Colten) Moore; seven grandchildren, one great grandchild; brother, John (Jeri) Sims; sister, Brenda (Bob) Weeter; nieces, Lena Sims, Kara Weeter; and nephew, Nathan (Bradie) Weeter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jaqueline “Jackie” Sims; and his parents.
Graveside service will be held Monday, June 9, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, one NE 60th Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa.

Terry was truly one of the good ones—an easygoing, kind-hearted soul who always made me feel welcome. He would always take time to sit and chat with me. He genuinely cared about what was going on in my life. He was a kind husband, a caring stepfather, and grandpa. The love he showed his family was clear to all. Terry will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. May he rest in peace.
