Winona "Nonie" Rush
September 16, 1945 — February 14, 2026
Winona “Nonie” Cecilia Rush, age 80, was called home to Heaven on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at home surrounded by family.
Services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, February 22, 2026. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 23, 2026, and will conclude with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. There will be a luncheon at the funeral home after the graveside service.
Nonie was born September 16, 1945, in Des Moines, Iowa to Wesley Woodrow Connett and Mildred Cecilia (Malloy) Connett. She married Lawrence “Larry” Everett Rush II on September 16, 1966. They welcomed son, Matthew in 1970 and daughter, Elizabeth in 1973.
She worked as a Legal Secretary during her working years, most notably for Vern Lawyer and Robert Ray. When Governor Ray was elected to office, she accompanied him as his legal secretary. Nonie took a hiatus to raise her family, and returned to the work force for various law firms, including Roger Kuhle and Mike Sellers. She concluded her career with Polk County Attorney’s Office, Drug and Gang Unit, retiring in 2012.
Her faith was a guiding force in her life and she was a devoted member of First Church of Christ in Ankeny. Nonie had a huge heart and a selfless nature. She served as the caretaker for her beloved husband. She enjoyed traveling, especially to northeast Iowa, where she loved leisurely walks along the Mississippi River. Nonie was an avid reader and enjoyed her flower garden. Her family brought her the greatest joy and she was endlessly proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She treasured time spent with them and made many wonderful memories with trips to the zoo and showing them around Des Moines.
Survivors include:
Her son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Stephanie Rush
Their children (Nonie’s grandchildren): Jessica (Shane) Miller (and their sons, Kruz and Archer); Kelsie (Sean) Emmons (and their children, Hannah and Henry); and Taylor Rush
Her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Tom Hagen
Their children (Nonie’s grandchildren): Brianna (Dusty) Kile (and their children, Della, Dutton, and Denver); Haley (Jared) Jasper; and Emily (Brody) Grandfield (and their daughter, Lainey).
Nonie is also survived by her “children of the Heart” Chad and Simone Adamson and their daughters, Sofie and Sina.
Nonie was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Larry Rush; brother, John Wesley Connett (Patricia); and her parents.
Memorial contributions may be directed to First Church of Christ in Ankeny.

I’ve known Nonie for 50 years. God greatly blessed me by placing her in my life as a very special friend. Words can’t express my affection for her and Larry. Nonie has always encouraged me, listened to me, never judged me (even when I deserved it), welcomed me, and fed me countless meals! We shared a special bond that time and distance have not eroded. It has only grown stronger. Now, Nonie, you’ve “graduated!” No more pain. I will miss you greatly! Say hi to Larry for me, wherever he is fishing! Matt and Elizabeth, my heart goes out to you during this time of sorrow and celebration! All my love, Kevin Cox

Nonie was a wonderful neighbor. When I moved in next door in 2017, she was the first person to come over and welcome me to the neighborhood. She always had a kind word and a smile. I enjoyed our conversations and our exchange of treats and home baked goodies. We looked-out for each other.
I will truly miss my sweet neighbor.

We are sad for all of us who knew Nonie, but we are so happy for her that she is reunited with Larry and has met Jesus face to face. What a Valentine's Day that must have been! We will miss seeing her at FCC in Ankeny on Sundays. It has been a pleasure knowing Nonie as a sister in Christ. We talked often about turning '80' last year as her birthday was a month after mine. We dearly wish we were in Iowa, so we could attend her funeral, but we are snowbirds currently in Arizona.

Nonnie was a wonderful neighbor and lady. So kind, and what a wonderful gardener and cook.
We lived three doors down from her and Larry. She always had a beautiful smile and kind word when they were on the walk around the neighborhood. It was so nice to get to know her in the 15 years we lived in that neighborhood. Our thoughts are with you all.

If you really knew Winona, there is little I can tell you about her incredible capacity of empathy and support easily extended to her family, friends and even mere acquaintances. Having worked with her for more than 25 years I was the recipient of more help and moral support than anyone deserves. She was a great teacher and never said “I told you so”. If faith and humility were measured in gold she’d be Midas. Thank you my friend, rest in peace.

Dear Winona,
You are the best pen pal ever!!! Just so you know, I still have all your letters. All 96 of them. My heart breaks knowing I can't write you and tell you about my flowers and all my other miscellaneous adventures. By the way, I planted my purple Hosta's and I'm going to miss sending you the pictures. But know that I also cry tears of joy knowing you're reunited with Larry. Until I see you again, Diane
