Dale Marvin Smith, age 89, passed away on May 25, 2026, at MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Dale was born on August 17, 1936, in Des Moines to Clarence and Dorothy (Curtis) Smith. He spent his early years in Iowa and developed a lifelong passion for learning, engineering, and exploring the world.

Dale attended Drake University before earning his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa. He later became a licensed civil engineer and built a distinguished career that spanned decades and crossed continents. Dale was especially proud of his work with the Peace Corps, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and numerous international consulting projects.

Throughout his career, Dale often remarked that he had completed engineering projects in 28 states and on four continents, working in environments that ranged from the Arctic to the tropics. His expertise took him around the globe, where he supervised road and bridge construction projects throughout Africa, India, Pakistan, and the Middle East. His work helped improve infrastructure and transportation systems for countless communities, leaving a lasting impact far beyond the places he called home.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Dale enjoyed staying active and embraced a love of sports throughout his life. He was an avid runner and golfer who appreciated the challenge that came with each pursuit.

Dale will be remembered for his intelligence, adventurous spirit, dedication to his profession, and the pride he took in the work he accomplished around the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Dorothy Smith, and his brother.

A graveside service will be held at a later date. Service information will be announced as it becomes available.
