David "Dave" Earl Beery

David Earl Beery, 71 of Johnston, Iowa passed away on May 27, 2025, of natural causes—a devoted father, grandfather, brother, friend, and community leader. Dave leaves behind a legacy of service and commitment to his family, church, friends, clients, and colleagues with whom he developed lifelong relationships.

David Earl Beery was born on January 14, 1954, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Robert and Ramona Beery. He attended Saydel Schools through his sophomore year and completed his high school education at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. Dave continued his education at Grand View University in Des Moines and Drake University where he obtained his BS in Business Administration. He also attended Drake Law School before dedicating his passion to serving others in Financial Planning and insurance needs. Throughout his school years, he participated in and supported multiple sports, and was a music enthusiast and proud church member. He supported and participated in numerous community service organizations. Dave was also proud to obtain his Eagle Scout award. Dave was and enjoyed being a lifetime learner.

Those who knew Dave recall how deeply proud he was of his family and Iowa roots. He was highly dedicated to his career in bettering his community in various clubs such as Rotary Club, Sertoma Club, Danish Brotherhood, Senior singers as well as various choirs and singing opportunities. He served in leadership roles in multiple organizations. He was also involved in many professional organizations related to his career, winning numerous awards.

Dave did not know a stranger. His positive view on life was infectious to all who knew him. He enjoyed his engagement with trivia nights, card groups, Drake University Women’s basketball games and The Drake Relays. Friends and family say he missed his calling as a DJ with his passion and knowledge of music. Dave will be remembered for his professional achievements, his positivity, and how he made others feel. He deeply valued friendship, and was kind, dependable, and loyal.

Dave is survived by his children, Derrick Beery (Debbie) and Danielle Hilby (Tim), grandchildren, Dane, Marisa, Ian, and Veronica; former spouse and good friend Debra Beery; sisters Debra Stratton (Kenny), Diane Hyatt (Eric) and brother Dennis Beery. In addition to many nieces and nephews, other survivors include loving cousins, aunts, uncles, extended family, and countless dear friends and professional colleagues. Preceding Dave in death his father, Robert “Bob” 1929-2006 and mother, Ramona “Mona” 1935-1993.

Friends and family have fond memories of Dave’s sense of humor, attention to detail, and wealth of knowledge. Dave was hard-working, honest, and a man of integrity. Dave had a gift to relate to your story whether through his own experience or acquired knowledge and wisdom. He took the time to show his big heart by reaching out, sending a note, making a call, and looking out for others. He enjoyed life and found a way to bring a laugh to everyone. Dave demonstrated his commitment to his faith and his belief in eternal life and expressed his desire to join his loved ones in heaven.

Family will greet guests on Thursday, June 5, 2025, from 4:00 -700 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. A funeral service will take place on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., at Staves United Methodist Church, 2727 E. Madison Ave., Des Moines. Dave will be laid to rest at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Ave., in Des Moines.
