Gregory Harwood, 78, passed away on May 14th, 2025 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born on June 29th, 1946 to Lawrence and Dorothy Harwood.

Greg graduated from Southeast Polk High School in 1965, where he was an outstanding football player. After graduation he joined the United States Navy and served for four years while being station in Panama during the Vietnam war. After coming home, he went to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 33 years and retired in 2003. His second career was with the Iowa State Fairgrounds for 21 years in communications, which he made many friends and was proud to be a part of the fairground’s tradition. Greg had many interests; fishing in Canada, snow skiing in Colorado, model trains enthusiast, and restoring vintage cars. He rode motorcycles in his youthful days. Greg loved to bowl and participated in many national bowling tournaments. He was dedicated to his wife, family and showed great interest in the activities of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Greg is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Jacque; daughter Diana (David) Ewing; grandchildren, Sahara Murray, Zachary (Amanda) Ewing and Jessica Ewing; great grandchildren, Tommy, Milo, Gisele and Sonny; brother, Larry (Joyce) Harwood, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Connie Vaughn and son Lawrence “Larry” Harwood.

A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street, Altoona, Iowa.
