Howard Leinen

Howard James Leinen, 95, passed away on October 24, 2025 at Bickford of West Des Moines. He was born on July 25, 1930 in Anamosa, Iowa to Christopher and Mary (Moyer) Leinen.
Howard graduated from Onslow High School, and after graduation, he joined the United States Navy to proudly serve his country. Upon returning home, he attended and graduated from the University of Iowa. In 1958, he married the love of his life, Shelby.
Howard worked throughout his career for Bankers Life, which later became Principal, retiring in 1993. During his time there, he also served as a Loaned Executive from Principal to the United Way
Howard was active in his community as a city councilman for Altoona and a Boy Scout leader. He was a longtime member of the Altoona United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and served on many committees. He was a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission for the city of Altoona. Howard found great joy in serving others through numerous volunteer activities.
Above all and most importantly, he loved his family and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Shelby Leinen; children, Jody (Raleigh) Benz, Jon (Sharyl) Leinen and Dave Leinen; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren with one more on the way.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Mary and Christopher Leinen; his brothers and sisters, and many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
Family will greet guests on Monday, November 3, 2025, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona, Iowa. A Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Howard will be laid to rest at the Altoona Cemetery, Altoona, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association in loving memory of Howard.
