James Alan Arthur
April 13, 1964 – September 1, 2025
James Alan Arthur, 61, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025.
James was born in Clarinda, Iowa, on April 13, 1964, to David and Elizabeth (Lindblom) Arthur. He spent his childhood in Clarinda and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1983. It was during these formative years that James discovered his love for the arts—particularly theatre—an interest that would remain a vibrant thread throughout his life.
James earned bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and Mass Communications from Buena Vista College (now Buena Vista University). He went on to work as a Key Grip for Channel 8 in Des Moines and later as a Video Replay Editor at Prairie Meadows.
A creative soul with a keen eye for beauty, James was an avid nature photographer. Among his collection, a photo of a swan—regarded by his family as his finest work—stood out as his personal favorite. He also had a lifelong passion for music, especially classic rock. His record, tape, and CD collection was a source of great pride, and few things sparked his enthusiasm more than talking about music or attending a concert.
James was deeply committed to staying active and could often be found participating in events like the Dam to Dam run or the American Lung Association stair climbs in Des Moines. His passion for physical wellness was matched only by his quiet strength and unwavering support for those he loved.
A lover of theatre and the arts, James held fond memories of his high school drama days and continued to champion the performing arts, especially when supporting his niece Kayleah’s own theatrical pursuits. He often recalled the guidance of his drama educators with great respect.
Though James was proud of his medals and race plaques, he considered his most important accomplishments to be the relationships he nurtured. He was a devoted big brother to Jennifer, a fun and supportive uncle, a loving great-uncle ("Grunkle"), and a steadfast friend. His playful spirit, generous heart, and grounded presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.
Some of the memories his family treasures most include his humorous performance in "Annie Get Your Gun," enduring a banana he loathed in the name of theatre; a special outing with Kayleah to the rock-infused stage show Hairball; gifting baby Finn his favorite book, now duct-taped from so much love; and a simple, meaningful day at Gray’s Lake with his nephew David before a big move.
James is survived by his sister, Jennifer Arthur; his "niblings", Kayleah Ryoshi and David Greenlee; his great-nephew, Finn; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Ann Arthur, and his brother, Daniel Arthur.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens; 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa. A reception will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Masonic Home Lodge; 5201 Maple Drive, Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
In honor of James' memory, memorial contributions may be made to Iowa Public Television, Buena Vista University, or the American Lung Association.
