Service Details

James “JD” Taft passed away peacefully at his home on November 22, 2025, at the age of 42.

JD was born on November 27, 1982, in Algona, Iowa, to D. James and Jean (Brandhoij) Taft. He graduated from Humboldt High School in the class of 2001. JD had a thirst for knowledge and was a lifelong learner, teaching himself about countless subjects. His passion for learning led him to computer science, earning certifications from ICCC and DMACC. As he often said, “I just Google it.”

A proud member of the Boy Scouts, JD appreciated the guidance and mentorship of his Scout leaders throughout his youth. He was also a talented musician, playing the clarinet in the school band and later joining the Methodist Church Hand Bell Choir, where he participated from grade school through adulthood.

JD began his career at the State Coroner’s Office while attending DMACC, and he continued to serve there for over 20 years. His work was known for its compassion, dependability, and professionalism, earning him the respect of colleagues statewide.

In 2007, JD joined Mediacom in the call center, where his skills in programming and process development quickly set him apart. He created unique solutions that earned him several Employee of the Year awards and the admiration of fellow tech enthusiasts. His contributions played a key role in Mediacom’s success.

JD had many passions outside of work, including gardening, home repairs, smoking meat, and auto repairs. He was always ready to lend a hand to family and friends. His favorite pastimes included playing Dungeons & Dragons, 3D printing, and spending time with those he loved. Known as the family’s “techy,” JD could always be counted on to solve any technical problem.

JD is survived by his daughter, Jada (MacKenzie) Diakis of Algona; his mother, Jean Taft of Des Moines; his Aunt Marj Schoon of Whittemore; his Uncle Allan (Nancy) Brandhoij of Bradgate; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, D. James Taft, and his Uncle Dan Schoon.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, Iowa. A reception will immediately follow the service at the funeral home.
