Long Inrachavongsa
December 31, 1983 — January 08, 2026
Long Somkith Inrachavongsa, age 42, was born in 1983 in Laos.
Long is survived by his children, Alexia and Brock Inrachavongsa; his mother, Chanda Inrachavongsa; and his siblings, Kham, Khom, and Mou Inrachavongsa; Tien Suriyan; Pok Baccam; and Pat Inrachavongsa.
After spending his early years in a refugee camp in Thailand, Long came to the United States with his mother and family in 1988. He spent much of his childhood in the River Hills neighborhood and later lived throughout the Des Moines area, staying close to his family.
Long attended Holy Family School for elementary and middle school, where he played basketball, ran track, and formed lasting friendships. He later attended Dowling Catholic High School and ultimately graduated from East High School.
Long loved sports. He loved to talk about them, debate them, and analyze them. His favorite sport was basketball. He fell in love with the game after watching the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. He loved playing so much that he would sometimes skip meals just to stay on the court. Chanda would have to pull him away by the ear to get him home. To those on the street courts, Long was a fierce competitor and something of a legend.
More than anything, Long loved his children, Alexia and Brock, and wanted only the best for them. One of his proudest moments was becoming a father. When Long learned that Alexia was on the way, he called everyone in his phone to share the news. And years later when he found out that Brock is expected, he couldn’t stop talking about the potential athlete his son might become and how he would finally have someone to debate sports with.
A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ambrose Cathedral, 607 High St, Des Moines, IA 50309.
