Mark William Jones, 70, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025 at UnityPoint Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. He was born on January 4, 1955, in Kearney, NE to Boyd and Coral (Frakes) Jones.

Mark graduated from Southeast Polk High School in 1973, while he was there he played football, track and field and was a state wrestler. After high school he attended Studio Academy of Advertising Art and Design in Omaha, NE, where he received his Associate’s Degree. He married his wife of 47 years, Dawn, in 1978. They welcomed two sons, Nicholas and Christopher. Mark worked at Maynard Printing, Chroma Graphic, and the City of Altoona in the Parks and Water Department. He served the City of Altoona in many capacities and served on the Fire Department and was one of the first EMT’s in Altoona. Mark also worked for the Parks and Water Department for 20 years and served on the City Council for 12 years and was a member of many other City Boards. He was a security person at the Val Air Ballroom and was a security guard for the Super Bowl for several years. He retired in 2020.

Mark enjoyed hunting with his boys all over the state of Iowa and even a few “wild boar hunting” adventures. He was a great grill and smoke master. Mark was a craftsman wood worker. He loved going on cruises, especially the Alaskan and Caribbean trips.

Mark is survived by his loving wife, Dawn; sons, Nicholas (Angie) and Christopher (Krysten) Jones; grandchildren, Lidia and Reese; sister, Carole Weaver; brother, Scott Jones and sisters-in-law, Deb (Jed) Fisk and Danette (Mike) Botts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Coral Jones; brother, Patrick Jones, sister-in-law, Susan Jones and mother-in-law, Maxine Goetsch.

Family will greet guests on Thursday, June 26, 2025, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona, Iowa. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., at Hope Lutheran Church, 3857 E. 42nd Street, Des Moines, Iowa.
