Phyllis Hastie
of Altoona, Iowa

Phyllis Hastie, 72, passed away on July 22, 2026, at Mill Pond in Ankeny, Iowa. She was born on May 11, 1954 to Donald and Margaret (Fredregill) Ballard.

Phyllis had a love for antiques, enjoyed treasure hunting at thrift stores, and loved collecting shells when she made her way to the ocean. She liked to take day trips with her family and find a small treasure to bring home. She had many fun memories of family trips to Minnesota growing up as well. Phyllis had an unending love for her parents, brothers, sisters, daughter Kathie, and her grandson Ethan. She was so proud of Ethan and enjoyed watching him grow up.

Phyllis attended East High School in Des Moines where she was proud to be an East High Stepper.

Phyllis served alongside Mike in over 25 years of ministry where she met so many people who became close friends and meant so much to her.

Mike and Phyllis met at the Iowa State Fair and the rest was a love story that reached 50 years. They cherished their time together and even chose to get married August 12th so that their anniversary would always fall during fair time so they could celebrate there. Their love story is a testament to God bringing them together and after being separated for awhile after Mike’s passing, they are together again.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Mike) Gonzalez; grandson, Ethan (Elaine) Hastie; siblings, Dennis Ballard, Clifford Ballard, Marjorie Burgess, Leonard (Sheryl) Ballard, Bettie (Ken) Danley, Connie (Harry) Quinn and Karen (Chris Costanza) Ballard; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mike and brothers, Fred Ballard and Jeffrey Ballard.
