Robert D (Bob) Bowers, a devoted family man, compassionate minister, and a cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully at his home in Mitchellville, Iowa on June 30, 2026, at the age of 91 with his son and daughter-in-law at his side. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, on March 22, 1935, to Clarence and Rose Bowers, Bob's life was a testament to his steadfast faith, unwavering love for his family, and his deep commitment to community service.

Bob's journey of learning and service began with his graduation from Mitchellville High School in 1953. He furthered his education at Drake University in Des Moines, where he graduated in 1957. His calling to serve others led him to Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, where he completed his studies in 1960, marking the beginning of a remarkable 65-year career as an ordained Methodist minister. Later in his career, he went on to obtain a master’s in public administration from University of Alaska, Anchorage in 1979.

On June 25, 1960, Bob married the love of his life, Beverly Ione Bowers. Together, they forged a beautiful life filled with love, faith, and adventure. They were blessed with a family that became the center of their world. Bob is survived by his children: Steve Bowers (Chrissy), Carolyn Bowers (David Buss), Christine Newbill (Mel), and David Bowers (Cairene). His legacy continues through his six grandchildren, Matt Bowers, Emily Weatherly (Chase), Keith Newbill (Natalie), Heather Newbill (Stone), Lindsey McNeley (Nick), and Tyler Hackett and four great-grandchildren Lily White, NinaLou McNeley, Ramona Bowers and Winslow Weatherly, whom he adored deeply. The family finds comfort in the thought that he is now reunited with Beverly, his wife of 52 years, his parents, and his great-granddaughter Willow Weatherly.

Bob's career as a minister began in Victor, Iowa, and later took him to Brookfield, Wisconsin. In 1967, he and Beverly embraced a new adventure, moving their family to Alaska. There, Bob served as a pastor in several communities, including Seward, Kenai, Anchorage, Ketchikan, and Nome. His dedication to serving others extended beyond the pulpit; he was the Director of Youth Homes for Alaska Children's Services and led the Mental Health Center in Anchorage. His work touched countless lives, offering hope and support to many in need.

A man of many talents, Bob had a deep bass voice that resonated beautifully. He shared his love for music through his involvement with the Anchorage Community Chorus and later with the Panorama Chorus. His artistic spirit found expression in the paintings he lovingly created of the places he cherished. A passionate photographer, Bob captured moments of joy and love, amassing a vast collection of slides and pictures that tell the story of a life well-lived.

Bob was known for his terrific storytelling, regaling his grandchildren with tales of his adventures and experiences. He had a unique ability to make every story come alive, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to hear them.

In his later years, Bob continued to serve his community as the President of the Panorama Resident Council at the Panorama retirement community in Lacey, Washington. His leadership and kindness were felt by all who knew him.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Christine Thompson and Home Instead for the compassionate care they provided during the time Bob spent back in Iowa. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort and peace to Bob and his family. Additional heartfelt gratitude is extended to Unity Point Hospice, whose dedicated nurses Kay, Marrietta, Holly and Erin, made it possible for him to live out his last days at home.

A service to celebrate Bob's remarkable life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Prairie Crossing Church; 102 2nd Street NW, Mitchellville, Iowa.
