Shirlee Mae Knapp Herrold was born January 11, 1933, to Walter and Helen Knapp.

She married William (Bill) Herrold July 1950 and to this union one daughter, Janet Herrold, was born.

As a family they enjoyed camping and traveling, and spending time with extended family. They were actively involved in the Methodist church.

On Monday, September 11, 2017; Shirlee Herrold was presented with the “Valiant Woman Award” at a Church Woman United (CWU) luncheon. This award is presented to a woman who has given service to CWU, her church and her community for an extended period of time.

In deciding the recipient of this award, it was noted that over the years Shirlee has given service to the following: Her service to Church Women United includes attending for over 45 years. She has served as President twice and has been the Committee Chair of their Public Relations Program.

Her service to Epworth includes attending church for over 60 years. She has attended an Adult Sunday School class (Go-Getters) for 62 years. She has also served on numerous committees, Lay Leader to the Annual Conference, MYF leaders, being in charge of fixing and serving Wednesday evening meals to over 45 youth. Over the years Shirlee has been active and served as President of the Cluster of Churches which included Epworth, the Presbyterian Church, Church of the Brethren, Lutheran Church and All Saints Catholic Church. She also helped the Cluster of Churches develop and organize the Cluster food Pantry that was housed for many years at Epworth. The cluster was also responsible for starting the area Thanksgiving Dinner which is now organized by Chuck’s restaurant. Over the years Shirlee has taught children’s Sunday School classes, helped with a number of children’s programs and has mentored two youth through their confirmation class.

Her service to the Community includes her involvement with the Highland Park Neighborhood Association since its inception. Ever since it started Shirlee has either served on the “steering committee” or as an officer. She continues in her service to her neighborhood by attending Eastside Neighbors and Friends and also attending Des Moines Neighbors.

1 ½ years ago Shirlee moved out of her home into independent living at McAuley Terrace. She had many friends there and enjoyed all their activities to include cards etc.

Shirlee passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at Lutheran Hosp.

There will be a celebration of Life at a later date.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill after 50 years of marriage; siblings, Charlotte Wilcox, LaVonne Dierks, Orville Knapp, and JR. Knapp

Shirlee is survived by her daughter, Janet Herrold; and her sister, Elva Pittman.
