Sue Decker Downey

Sue Downey passed away peacefully at the age of 87, on April 1, 2026. Sue was born in Des Moines, Iowa. She lived the majority of her life in Des Moines.

Sue worked as an Administrative Assistant to Governor Robert Ray’s assistant. Sue served as the Bureau Chief for the Energy Assistance Program of Iowa. Upon her retirement, Sue was a tour guide in the state capital. Sue enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, and reading. Sue was a kind, loving, and generous woman.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cecil & Mayme Decker, her sibling Thomas Decker, and her husband Gordon Downey, Jr. Sue is survived by her three children Melia Downey, James Downey and his wife Amy Hannan, and Aimee Wade, three grandchildren Eric Griffith, Austin Griffith, and Genevieve Wade, and her two great grandchildren Parker Griffith and Tucker Griffith. Sue’s memory will live on in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held on April 21, 2026 at 2:30 pm at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines.

I lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made in Sue’s honor to The Animal Rescue League of Des Moines.
