Thomas Alvin Mackie, 90, was welcomed into Heaven on December 17, 2025. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1935 and remained a lifelong resident of the area. Tom graduated from East High School, attended Drake University, and served in the Army Reserves. Following his time at Drake, he spent his entire professional career in insurance, working for various companies, including Preferred Risk and Farm Bureau.

Tom met the love of his life, Margaret, and they were married in 1961 and had two daughters. Tom loved his family deeply, and they all cherished him. Faith was a cornerstone of Tom’s life and family; he was a member of Grandview Park Baptist Church and later of Grace Church.

Tom had a passion for God, his family and friends, sports, cars, and good food. He also enjoyed challenges and adventures. For over thirty years, Tom officiated the high jump at the Drake Relays and also officiated at many Iowa State Boys and Girls Track & Field events. At the age of 71, Tom rode his bicycle and completed RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa). After retiring, he and Margaret became Master Gardeners through Iowa State University's program.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Esther Mackie, as well as his two older brothers, Donald and Robert.

Those who will miss him greatly include his wife, Margaret Mackie; his daughter, Lynee Hoover; his daughter and son-in-law, Kristen and David Dearden; and his granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Samatha and Brandon Minton.

Visitation will be held from 9:00- 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 26, 2025, with funeral service to follow at 10:00 a.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens. 121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines, Iowa 50313. Burial will take place across the street at Highland Memory Gardens. Family invites you to a luncheon at Grace Church, 4200 E 25th Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50317 following the graveside service.
